Since my father’s death, my mother had made it a tradition to gather the whole family every Sunday for dinner. It became a routine that neither my brother nor I had ever missed.
One Sunday, while I was preparing for dinner, I received a text from my mother a few hours before the usual dinner time: “Today’s dinner is canceled. Please don’t come.”
I was puzzled for a moment. My mother is always punctual, and if she had to cancel, she would have told us much earlier. This message immediately worried me. There was something off about all of this.
A gut feeling pushed me to go to her house anyway. When I arrived in front of her house, I noticed that all the curtains were closed, which was very unusual for her.
At that moment, I was sure something was wrong.
I opened the door to her house, and what I found there literally shocked me.
When I entered, I saw a man sitting at the kitchen table, a man who looked too much like my father.
It was her twin, James, a person we had no idea existed.
Mom told us that she had loved him before meeting our father.
James had left without any explanation and had cut all contact with her.
This time, he came to ask for a second chance, but my mother asked him to leave.
The following Sunday, mom invited us again for dinner.
